Brief description of Institution of Technical Education

Established in 1992, ITE is the principal provider of career and technical education and a key developer of national skills certification and standards, skilling Singapore for the future economy. It promises a “Hands-on, Minds-on, Hearts-on” learning experience that will equip students with employable skill sets, develop students into an independent-thinking and highly adaptable individual and nurture students into one who has passion for what one does, has self-belief and one who cares for the community and society. ITE also mimics the ‘real world’ future workplace within their colleges such as the Healthcare Simulation Training Centre@College East, Amber | West Training Restaurant, and Aerospace Hub@College Central.

Why did you choose ITE over other post-secondary schools?

"
I chose ITE because my results wasnt that great so ITE was the only choice but after doing more research, I realise it is more hands on so I chose ITE " --- Senior X

What is ITE's school culture?

"
I am not very sure cause i nvr really participate and mingle around others😅 but i would say the culture there is great, the teachers are encouraging, supportive and friendly " ---Senior X

"
As opposed to many people's belief that ite is the end, actually most people I know aspire to go to poly or even uni and are working hard towards that. The lecturers are very caring and knowledgeable and if you have trouble passing a module, they will call you up for a revision session before doing a retest. At first you will do a prep course for dpp students only before merging with nitec students who went higher nitec as well as ppl from o lvl so you can also ask them abt things you dont know or even make friends with them. My class in a sense is very open and we go around helping each other if we have trouble during lab so its good. If you join ccas you also get the opportunity to make friends from diff courses so I feel that in general, ite is very open as long as u make the opportunity to connect with others" ---Senior C

What is your course and why did you choose it?

"
My course is early childhood. I chose it because I really like being around and interacting with young children " ---Senior X

"
I am a y2 student at IT systems & network. I chose this course because I like computers and I want to get a job in the IT industry. Honestly I almost went to an architecture course if I didnt choose this as my 3rd choice because I was feeling complacent abt my emb3 hahahahahha. Pls choose wisely and dont be like me think that "aiya ite oni just whatever la i cfm get in 1st choice"" ---Senior C

How is the academic rigour? Is it competitive? Is everyone fixated on results?

"
I think that the pace is just right as for my course. It is mainly projects so the deadlines set are reasonable. I wouldn't say it is very competitive as there are only a few that are competitive, generally everyone is encouraging and supportive " ---Senior X

"
I am sure every course has its hardships but I will elaborate on my course. It is semi-competitive as most of us want to progress to IT related courses in either NP or SP so we always aim for 3.0 and above gpa. Most of us study with our friends but some choose to solo study but its up to you tbh what ur method is as long as you can concentrate." ---Senior C

What is the teaching structure in ite? (eg lecture based, lab-based, internship based)

"
It is a mix of lecture and lab based and there would be an internship during the last 6 months ." ---Senior X

"
It has everything you listed above. Lectures can be theory and practical, sometimes both in 1 day. For theory, we need to buy the workbook / worksheet and for me, I highlight whatever important points my lecturer emphasizes so I can revise as it is tested for exams. For practical, we use the school's PC or if you have the software, you can do the lab on your very own laptops. So basically the lecturer will go through the lab with us then we follow the labsheet to do our work. Inside the labsheet there are some questions u need to answer aswell. Currently I am about to end my internship so I am the most well versed in this topic hahaha so we will get posted to a company assigned to us by the school itself and we will be under a supervisor for the duration of 2 months. Majority of my friends all get into a IT related company and in the end of your internship, you will need to do a presentation and final report. As for the pay, it really depends lah I would say around 450-600 per month because you are just an intern not a full timer." ---Senior C

Typical school day:

"
We would start around 9am and end around 4pm " ---Senior X

"
So we go to school around diff timings ( sometimes 8:30, 9 or 10 o clock) for lectures then maybe a lab or practical until 5. There will be sports and wellness ( basically PE) once a week and honestly, its quite chill sitting in an aircon room for the majority of your schooling life lmao." ---Senior C

what are some stereotypes labelled upon students in ITE that are untrue in your perspective?

"
People who study in ITE are very vulgur, violent and are hopeless as the older generation used to think that if u go ITE, it is the end. Another stereotype is that our school is filled with gangsters. But these are not true as it is just that few that made people think like that but there are alot of good and nice people in ITE. ITE is alot more hands on so u get to have more experience and get a glimpse of how its like in the industry through the projects and attachments. It is not the end as long as u work hard, u can still achieve your dreams and goals just that it may take slightly longer than others. " ---Senior X

"
At first, I thought my class will be full of YPs and bad students LOL but apparently i was wrong. Most of us are rly down to earth and care about our studies so we help each other out ah. ITE does have a reputation of having gangsters but as long as you dont mix with the wrong crowd its fine" ---Senior C

Why did you choose dpp over pfp/o levels?

"
My emb3 is 14 (12 if cca points included) and I did quite badly for my best 3 ( got like 3 B4s LUL) so I didnt get a chance in pfp even tho I really want to. Besides, I already want to get into a IT course in poly in the first place so might as well try for dpp. I didnt want to go to sec 5 because I think I will legit die trying to cram 4 years worth of o lvl syllabus in 1 year hahaha. I feel ite gives me a chance to get a headstart in poly so my first year wouldnt be so hectic as I know some things alr. " ---Senior C
